02The basics
What an implant is
A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. A connector called an abutment joins a crown to the post. An implant is designed to replace a missing tooth, and we cannot promise how it will work or look for any one person.
Implants are one option for a missing tooth. Bridges and dentures are others, and we explain the trade-offs in time, cost and upkeep.
03Who
Who provides implant care here
Our general dentists plan and place single-tooth implants and fit the crown. We are general dentists, not surgical specialists. If your case needs more than we provide, such as a major bone graft or a complex extraction, we refer you to a specialist and stay involved in the plan.

The stages

Illustrative, AI-generated
- Exam and planningAn exam, X-rays and a talk about your health and goals. We check the bone where the implant would go.
- Preparing the site, if neededA tooth may need to be removed, or bone added, and the area needs time to heal.
- Placing the implantThe post is placed in the jawbone with the area numbed.
- HealingOver the following months, the bone fuses to the implant.
- Abutment and crownWhen the implant is stable, we attach the abutment and fit a crown made to match your bite and your other teeth.
- Check-upsImplants need regular cleaning and check-ups, like natural teeth.
05Time
How long it takes
For a single tooth it usually takes several months from the first visit to the final crown. Most of the time is healing. A tooth removal or a bone graft first can add more.
06Fit
Is an implant right for you?
Good general health matters more than age. Some conditions, such as diabetes that is not well controlled, and tobacco use, can slow healing and affect the result. Your dentist will ask about your health and may suggest you talk to your doctor first.
Not everyone is a candidate, and that is a clinical decision we make with you after an exam.
07Benefits and risks
Benefits and risks
The benefit of an implant is a replacement tooth that is fixed in the jaw instead of resting on the gums or relying on neighboring teeth.
The risks are those of any surgery, and some are particular to implants. The US Food and Drug Administration lists damage to nearby teeth, injury to tissue during surgery, numbness from nerve involvement, a loose abutment screw, infection around the implant, and loss or failure of the implant. Before treatment, your dentist explains the benefits, the risks for you, and the alternatives, including a bridge, a denture or leaving the space.

10Questions
Questions people ask
Does getting an implant hurt?
The area is numbed before the implant is placed. Some soreness afterward is common. Your dentist explains what to expect for your case.
How long does it take?
For one tooth, usually several months from the first visit to the final crown. Most of that time is healing.
Does insurance cover implants?
It depends on your plan. The price above is a self-pay reference, not your insured cost. Ask your insurer about the allowed fee, deductible, annual maximum, waiting period and exclusions.
What if an implant is not right for me?
Bridges and dentures are other ways to replace a missing tooth. Your dentist explains the trade-offs in time, cost and upkeep.
