01What it covers
What it covers
General dentistry is the everyday care that keeps teeth and gums healthy and repairs them when they are not. At Brazos Street Dental, three general dentists and two hygienists provide it, with a plan explained before any treatment begins.
02Check-ups and cleanings
Check-ups and cleanings
A check-up is an exam by a dentist, usually with a cleaning by a hygienist. The dentist looks at your teeth, gums, bite and the tissues of your mouth. The hygienist removes plaque and tartar and polishes your teeth, and shows you where your home care can improve. How often you need a visit depends on your risk of cavities and gum disease; see How often do I need a cleaning?
03X-rays
X-rays
X-rays show what cannot be seen by looking, such as decay between teeth, bone levels and tooth roots. Your dentist decides which X-rays you need based on your age, history and risk. Tell us if you are or might be pregnant before any X-ray.
04Fillings
Fillings
A filling repairs a tooth damaged by decay or a small break. We use tooth-colored filling material, which matches the shade of the tooth around it, and we numb the area first. A filling is priced by the number of surfaces of the tooth it covers.
05Crowns
Crowns
A crown is a cap that covers a tooth that is weakened, broken or has a large filling. Making a crown usually takes a preparation visit and a fitting visit. We explain which type of crown suits the tooth and why. For more about the experience, see Does getting a crown hurt?
06Gum health
Gum health
Healthy gums hold teeth in place. If your exam shows signs of gum disease, we explain what we found and recommend a deeper cleaning where it is needed. Gum disease is also something we check at each visit, because it often has no pain at first.
If your gums or the bone around your teeth need care beyond what a general dentist provides, we refer you to a periodontist, who is a specialist, and stay involved in your care.
